⚠️ Automotive Information You Need To Know ⚠️
This training course focuses on vehicle entry and automotive locksmith skills, specifically gaining access to locked vehicles when keys are inside.
You will learn professional entry techniques along with key automotive locksmith skills such as:
• Vehicle lock picking
• Vehicle lock decoding (theory and practical)
• Broken key extraction from vehicle locks
• Understanding automotive wafer lock systems
The course also covers many of the additional lock types found within the automotive sector, including:
• Caravan locks
• Trailer hitch locks
• Wheel clamps
• Steering locks
• Pedal locks
• Roof bar and roof box locks
These represent multiple additional revenue streams that many locksmiths encounter in real-world work.
⚠️ Automotive Locksmithing – A Reality Check
We want to be completely transparent about the current state of the automotive locksmith industry.
We no longer teach vehicle key cutting, key coding, or immobiliser programming.
Not because these skills are not valuable — but because the modern automotive industry has increasingly restricted independent access to these systems.
The Reality of Modern Vehicles (2026+)
Modern vehicles now require access to highly restricted systems, including:
• Manufacturer-approved diagnostic equipment
• Live server authentication
• Security gateway access
• Ongoing subscriptions and system audits
• Digital identity verification systems such as SERMI
In today’s automotive environment, skill alone is no longer enough to access these systems.
Estimated Cost to Operate Legitimately (UK)
To operate a fully compliant automotive locksmith operation working with modern vehicle security systems, typical costs may include:
£8,000 – £15,000 Dealer-level training courses per manufacturer or vehicle group
£5,000 – £10,000 Professional diagnostic hardware and programming systems
£2,500+ Manufacturer approval processes, security checks, and authorisation fees
£1,500 – £3,000 per year - Subscriptions, renewals and access fees for dealer code systems
This means many automotive specialists face £20,000 – £40,000+ in start-up investment before a business becomes operational.
Additional Business Costs
These costs are separate from normal business setup costs such as:
• Marketing and websites (often £5,000 – £8,000+)
• Vehicles (£20,000 – £60,000+)
• Insurance (£3,000 – £9,000 depending on cover)
• Tools, stock, and additional training
Access to certain vehicle systems can also be restricted or revoked at any time, depending on manufacturer policies.
The Direction of the Automotive Industry
The automotive security sector is rapidly moving toward manufacturer-controlled ecosystems where access is governed by:
• software platforms
• cryptographic security
• server-side authentication
• digital identity verification
• encrypted vehicle systems
Increasingly, modern vehicle security is becoming a software-driven industry rather than a mechanical one.
This means independent locksmith access may continue to become more restricted as vehicle manufacturers tighten control over their systems.
The Question Every Student Should Ask
If entering the automotive sector today requires significant investment in:
• training
• software
• diagnostic equipment
• security compliance
• subscriptions
• marketing and vehicles
Then every new student should honestly ask:
Can that investment realistically be recovered within the lifespan of the technology and access available?
We believe every responsible training provider should encourage students to consider this carefully before investing heavily into automotive programming systems.
Our Position
Our approach is simple.
We choose:
-
Transparency over hype
-
Sustainability over trends
-
Skills that endure, not expire
Our goal is to teach locksmith skills that remain valuable, accessible, and profitable for independent professionals.
Our Focus Instead
Our training focuses on areas of locksmithing that continue to work well for independent locksmith businesses:
• Residential locksmithing
• Commercial locksmithing
• Mechanical security systems
• Non-electronic access systems
• Business development and marketing
These are areas where skilled independent locksmiths still thrive and build sustainable businesses.
Bottom Line
If you are looking for a quick route into automotive key programming, this course is NOT designed for that path.
If you are looking to build a long-term locksmith career based on real skills that work alongside other locksmith skills such as residential and commercial locksmithing and sustainable business models, you are in the right place.
Please also note, you will require further training to operate a auto locksmith business after this course.
